A Connected RO and EDI Treatment Train

RO provides primary desalination; EDI then continuously removes residual ions from correctly conditioned RO permeate.

The two technologies perform different roles. RO reduces the dissolved-salt load, while EDI acts as a high-purity polishing stage. Pretreatment, RO permeate quality, monitoring and distribution interfaces are engineered together.

What is the role of RO in an RO + EDI system?+

RO is the primary desalination stage. It reduces dissolved salts and provides the conditioned feed basis reviewed for EDI polishing.

What is the role of EDI?+

EDI continuously removes residual ions from suitable RO permeate. It is a polishing stage, not a replacement for upstream treatment.

Does EDI need RO permeate?+

EDI normally requires correctly conditioned RO permeate. Feed requirements such as hardness, CO₂, silica, conductivity and temperature should be reviewed during engineering.

How does RO + EDI differ from double-pass RO?+

Double-pass RO adds a second desalination stage; RO + EDI adds continuous ionic polishing after suitable RO permeate. The required use-point quality determines which route is appropriate.
